Undergraduate laboratories - unsupervised access

Conditions of use

Unsupervised access to these labs is a privilege which can only be maintained if students use these facilities responsibly. Students who disturb other students or staff with noisy or unruly behaviour will lose their access privileges and may jeopardise the access privileges of others.

Students are permitted to use these labs under the following conditions:

  • entry codes are not to be divulged to others
  • unauthorised students are not allowed in the labs
  • the after hours log book must be filled out after 5:30pm and at weekends
  • students must not work alone after hours
  • doors must not be jammed open
  • windows must not be left open when the lab is unoccupied
  • equipment (especially soldering irons) must not be left switched on when the lab is unoccupied
  • equipment must not be removed from the labs
  • all incidents of breach of security must be reported immediately to the lab manager
  • all accidents and safety hazards must be reported immediately to the lab manager

All students are expressly forbidden to construct or modify 240V mains power wiring (including wiring mains plugs and cables) or to open the cases of mains operated equipment. Any repairs or modifications to mains operated equipment or power cables must be carried out by the Workshop staff.

Students must adhere to the University's Internet Code of Practice.

Students are not permitted to install software on any computer or to alter the software configuration of any computer. All floppy disks must be scanned before use. (Ask the workshop where to find the Scan program.)

It is the responsibility of students to ensure that no unauthorised persons are given access to the labs or are permitted to remain in them. Periodic checks will be made and if any unauthorised person is found in a lab all students present in the lab at the time will lose their access privileges.

Check the location of your nearest emergency telephone before you start working in an unsupervised laboratory.

Remember: In an emergency, ring 2222
